G. GIVE AND TAKE - PROPOSAL

Proposal

To make the study of Spiritual Science/Human Values a compulsory subject at the primary/middle /high school / Higher Secondary level for all the children of our nation.

The Need:

• The various problems that society faces only prove that man has lost control over himself and forgotten his Divine nature.

• It is also necessary to eliminate the social evils of communal hatred and religious bigotry, which create much unrest. We need to educate children about the ‘Truth’, ‘Goodness’ and ‘Beauty’ of all major religions of the world and of their own inner Self. This will help human beings to understand and appreciate one another and live in harmony as they grow up.

• The multiplication of wants and desires leading to excessive consumerism also as a by-product causes pollution and all its related ill effects that threaten our very existence on this planet. It is therefore necessary to have a ceiling on desires.

Our Effort: - An endeavour in this direction has been made in the form of a series of books (1-12) Human Values - Spiritual Science. These text books contain a compilation of appropriate stories and teachings from all the major religions of the world, Human Values and knowledge of the ‘body-mind-intellect-soul’ entity. This compilation is an effort to put the material used in Sri Sathya Sai Human Values and ‘Bal Vikas’ classes (Sri Sathya Sai Spiritual Education) as well as other materials from the ‘Divine Discourses’ and teachings of Bhagawan Baba, into a suitable format for teaching within the school curriculum, for classes 1 to 12, and have been used in some Sai and other schools and Kendriya Vidyalayas.

It is felt that this knowledge should be universalized as soon as possible for the benefit of the nation. The present texts could be used in a ‘start -up’ or ‘pilot project’ and later, if and as required, the content could be suitably modified, depending on the feed back.

Our Request to the Government / Education bodies / Educational Institutions :

We request your good self to use the power of your esteemed office in this extremely important service to the nation and mankind at large by providing a platform whereby Spiritual Science-Human Values becomes a compulsory full time, regular (not just once a week) subject at – primary / middle / higher levels, in educational institutions.

Teachers who are inspired in this direction can teach the subject using the above mentioned text books as guidelines. If required the Sri Sathya Sai Institutions, and their Alumni can organise workshops to provide guidelines, inspiration and motivation for these teachers.

Kindly let us know your good response and how we can help in the same.

ANNEXURE

Why Spirituality / Spiritual Science ?

• The essence of Spirituality is that man is fundamentally Divine. Man is not just this material body, but has in him the immortal, infallible Divine spirit i.e. the ‘Atma’ or ‘soul’. The true purpose of education is therefore to transform the ‘animality’ in us to ‘humanity’ and then to ‘Divinity’.

• ‘Love all and serve all’, ‘help ever and hurt never’ and ‘ceiling on desires’ then become a part of one’s life. These will not only improve the quality of individual life but also society at the National and International level.

How Do We Teach Spirituality?

• Spirituality can be inculcated more through direct experiment with, and experience of, one’s own self, than through the study of books. Books however do provide guidelines for carrying out the ‘experiments with truth’.

• The inculcation and experience of this Divine truth can be brought about in two ways

• The first is that at a young age (nursery/primary) the knowledge of the latent divinity must be sown at least theoretically. This is the age where the mind is most receptive, open and highly retentive.

• The second is through the study of the lives of Saints, Prophets and Evolved souls who have experienced the Supreme Truth.

• Both these things have been put appropriately in a palatable form in our text books and taught to young minds by dedicated teachers.

Current Curriculum Scenario

• No attempt has been made at the national level to have a compulsory curriculum for imparting knowledge of the latent Divinity in man, Knowledge of the body-mind-intellect-Soul principle, Knowledge which leads to true self-confidence.

• Currently very little, almost nothing regarding diverse religious cultures is taught under the banner of formal education.

While the government bodies and those at the helm of affairs remain silent and neutral in the name of secularism, most children at home already start growing under the narrow influence of the only religion/culture that their parents know. The end result after many years is men who are often ignorant of any other creed, or belief. Such an attitude may lead to misunderstandings.

• The largest number of people undergo their primary/middle schooling only. As one goes up the educational ladder, there is a sharp drop in the numbers. Specialized courses at the higher levels thus do not affect the society at large.

• It is worth mentioning that the Sri Sathya Sai Education in Human Values through its ‘Bal Vikas’ programmes has been imparting the required knowledge to many children throughout India and abroad. Clearly there is a need to universalize the essence of these teachings which have already proved their worth to those who have gone through these programmes in spreading Sathya, Dharma, Shanti, Prema and Ahimsa i.e. Truth, Right Conduct, Peace, Love and Non-Violence.

PSYCHOLOGY is that branch of knowledge which studies “Behaviour”. As behaviour depends on human thinking or mind, human Psychology, the Science of the Psyche, can be said to be the study of human mind or mental make-up. In the west, Aristotle (384-322B.C.) was the first person to study Psychology. According to him the soul or mind was centred in the heart and had various powers like knowledge, memory, the faculty to think etc. Descartes (1596-1650 A.D.) too expressed the view “Cognito ergo sum” ie. “I think therefore I am” this in support of the existence of the Soul.

Western Psychology more or less presents the ‘external’ view point, ie more or less the surface layers of Consciousness, the Psyche, whereas ‘Indian Psychology’ ie Spirituality goes to the very depth of the Psyche, to the Source, to the Pure Divine Consciousness.

TRAUMA: Distressing or unpleasant experience and situation sometimes lead to emotional problems. If the distress is very deep the person suffers emotional shock which may result in a lasting harmful effect on the personality, leading perhaps to the extreme step of even ending life. Pressurising, condemning etc which create extreme tensions should be avoided. All are souls on their journey to the Divine, all are under the Divine Director, all are under His guidance or control. Who belongs to whom ? A detached attitude to life, doing one’s duty to the best and leaving the rest to the Divine, helps to remove tensions. It is easier to do the right thing, to forgive and forget rather than face a guilty conscience, later.

If there are problems at home, the child faces tensions. However the school and enlightened teachers can work wonders by providing loving and strengthening inputs through the Human Values Spiritual Science Classes. The mother’s early influence and training, and the home environment are important factors in children’s life. It is necessary to control and channelise the growing children’s abundant energies in useful, activities in the positive direction. A child is basically Sath-Chith-Ananda Swarup ie. Divine. Spirituality which confers emotional stability based on Truth, can play a pivotal role in steadying human life. A child who has emotional stability and a steady character will be able to withstand the inevitable ups and downs of life. Each child is born with heredity genetc potential–DNA instructional code, sanskaras or tendencies.

Each human being is unique, born to work out his/her own destiny. Achieving high academic performance is not the be all and end all of life. Students should put in their best sincere effort to their duty, and then they and their parents should be content with whatever they are able to achieve. What is of greater importance is to be a good person living in accordance with Divine Laws. Rich, middle or poor, goodness is what makes life happy.

Acquainting children with spiritual knowledge will help them to imbibe the truths naturally and give them the strength and detachment to deal with the various demands of life with equanimity. Where other supports fail one should pray and seek the All-encompassing Love and Compassion of the Divine for succour. This alone gives the strength and support to overcome traumatic experience.
